Design notes
Specification
A long-lived tree which tolerates a wide variety of conditions and does well in an urban setting.
Failure mode
Extremely difficult to transplant once established. Some consider this tree messier than their teenage children, due to its acorn production.
Year three
Most sources list this as growing to a full height of 50–70 feet; however, in our region that is not typical within a realistic timeframe, since trees grow more slowly on our side of the mountains due to our arid, colder climate.
This holds true for many — though not all — of the larger plant material found in our region. Plant growth generally slows or ceases somewhere within the 32–50°F range, depending on the plant. In Central Oregon, even in summer, nighttime temperatures of 50°F or lower are common, which is why many things will not grow or thrive here the way they do in other Intermountain West locations such as Salt Lake City, Utah or Denver, Colorado.
