Specification
One of five plants that define the High Desert of Central Oregon. The others are Ponderosa Pine, Idaho Fescue, Rabbitbrush and Western Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis). Just add quail and you have nailed the quintessential Central Oregon scene.
Failure mode
Sagebrush and the other four plants that define the Central Oregon landscape don’t always play well together. Each one defines the scene you are emulating, or trying to create. It is also the wrong plant inside the first five feet of a structure — the volatile oils burn hot, and NFPA 1140 wants nothing combustible in that zone.
Year three
Can grow much larger than one might expect with regular irrigation.
Ticks: I grew up surrounded by a thousand acres of it, and I am convinced this is why I have found more ticks on me throughout my life than most. Not a proven fact — just my personal experience.
